Land of the Long Weekend

The Melbourne Cup - the first Tuesday in November, and also a public holiday for the Melbourne Metropolitan area - if you live outside Australia, you'll be interested to know that this is probably the only country in the world where the entire nation stops for a horse race!!!! Many families and community groups make a day of it, and if they can't get to Flemmington for the race, they spend the day having barbecues or picnics, running Melbourne Cup sweeps for fun.
Many people take a holiday on the Monday as well, making it a four day break.
If you are in the Phillip Island area, there is a patchwork and woodcrafters show at Newhaven.
